Recently in the shops, a question has come
under much discussion:
real or fake?

The topic is handbags.

You ask, how can you be sure that resale handbags
are authentic?
In the resale business, we are absolutely committed
to bringing you only authentic handbags, and we
meticulously examine each and every product that we consign for you.

Want to know more?
Here are a few helpful tips to
determine the authenticity of a handbag:

--Genuine leather: does it have a real leather patina?
Fake leather will wrinkle and crack.
Does is smell like leather?
This may seem silly, but genuine leather has a distinctive
smell and feel.

--Logos: generally, logo patterns on authentic bags
will be symmetrical, evenly spaced,
and true to the design of the brand's original logo.
If logo patterns look crooked, squished,
or if the typography differs from the brand's known
design, the handbag is probably counterfeit.

--Stitching: authentic handbags have even, straight, good-quality
stitching that rarely unravels.

--Manufacture: genuine handbags often have an embossed
or printed "creed" that lists the item's
country of design, country of manufacture,
and sometimes the item's serial number.
If this creed is consistent with the brand's quality
(deeply embossed, evenly spaced, grammatically correct)
then the handbag is probably authentic.
Many brands do not print the item's serial number directly
on the handbag, however, and so an easy way to check
that the style is one produced by the brand
is to do a Google search to find examples of the same
style on reputable websites (Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom,
or the brand's own website.)

I was trying to explain to someone why this gown from Alexander McQueen's last collection was so exciting to me, and I couldn't quite convey it.

It has something to do with the conceptual story being told:

In other fashion designer news, Olivier Theyskens is designing for Theory! This is awesome because Nina Ricci was stupid for letting him go... particularly after his killer fall 09 RTW collection. We think he's better off at Theory, anyway. They're a lot more contemporary and less stiff than Nina Ricci-- not to mention MUCH more affordable (although perhaps this line won't be). We just adore their knitwear-- we get lots of it in at our stores. Yum!

McQueen Chooses Creative Director

The word is out: Sarah Burton is the new creative director for Alexander McQueen, after his tragic suicide in February. This decision reflects a recent shift in fashion's creative directors from famous starlettes to qualified designers-- perhaps because of the economy? Either way, we're excited about the announcement because it means more McQueen to come, and from someone who understands the label's core competency. She has worked for McQueen for 16 years, and completed the most recent runway show in only weeks, after the designer's sudden death.

Plastic Bag Pandemonium

We found some horrifying statistics on the National Geographic website that we thought we'd share. Not to make you sad, just to make you aware:

In 2001, the Environmental Protection Agency estimated U.S. plastic bag use to between 500 billion and 1 trillion bags a year.
About 3 percent become litter-hanging from fences or trees, clogging storm drains, and causing problems for wildlife. Many bags are recycled. About 50% end up as waste.
67 bags weigh 1 pound, so 500 billion bags= 7,462,685,567 pounds of white plastic grocery bags going to landfills each year.
Pound for pound, plastics contain as much energy as petroleum or natural gas, so this represents the loss of almost 4 billion tons of energy each year.

A Dress for Every Occasion

With every spring comes celebration. Whether you're planning for a trip, a backyard barbecue, a July 4th celebration, weddings, or just dinner with friends, dresses are the most fun way to make a feminine statement. We've chosen three events and three dresses to put together the perfect outfit for the occasion.

Just because it's spring doesn't mean we don't have to dress for evening. It can't be all florals and rainbows every day! Okay, so maybe it can, but sticking to more jewel-like colors can make a more appropriate nighttime look. We love the menswear-esque blazer over the feminine silk dress. You can still wear black shoes, but an open toe brings the look into spring. A little extra glitz and a smaller purse make for chic cocktail style. When choosing a dress for evening, a little shine is very festive... you can draw it out with fun and sparkly accessories. Remember: cocktail hour is the perfect time to show a tasteful amount of sexy skin!

Casual daytime events give us a chance to get a bit flirty. Ruffles, floral prints, breathable cottony fabrics and comfort are the keys for a perfect dress. We love summer-weight scarves in bright cheery colors. Nobody wants to be weighed down by heavy jewelry for backyard barbecues and Independence Day, so we opted for a fun lever-back earring. Don't forget the Frye boots!

Spring also means wedding season. When choosing a dress to wear to a wedding, keep in mind that this is a day for the bride and groom! Plunging necklines should be avoided or concealed with a camisole. Flashy prints and sequins can be very distracting... save the bling for the accessories. A good rule of thumb is not to wear anything you wouldn't wear with your grandma, as someone's grandma is bound to be in attendance! We suggest a dress with a classic cut that is not terribly tight and hits at or below the knee. Sass it up with your accessories. We've chosen a contrasting sandal, complementing clutch, and matching corsage. This gorgeous Kate Spade necklace ties it all together, but could be skipped for a more casual wedding.

Summer Color Contrasts

Summer is a great time to experiment with complementary colors. A bright contrast sings of fruit and sunsets! Complementary colors are colors who lie on opposite sides of the color wheel. Our pinwheel is a simplified color wheel. Here are a few outfits using fun complementary color contrasts for the summer season:

1.) Orange and Turquoise:
Turquoise is quite possibly the most popular this season, so using a bit of orange adds that extra pop to a monotone outfit. Reminds us of eating clementines seaside!

2.) Hot Pink and Kelly Green:
Watermelon anyone? This look makes me want to jump for joy after a long jog! We all have our color tendencies-- try purchasing a handbag or scarf in the color opposite your fav.

3.) Purple and Yellow:
Purple and yellow are a personal favorite. The happy canary color adds life to a moody jewel tone-- a great way to bring your fall and winter favorites right into the summer season!

If you haven't checked out the site, you definitely should... particularly if you're like us and enjoy playing with cute clothes and accessories!

Polyvore is a fun site that allows you to put clippings (usually of clothes and accessories) together in a montage or "set." It also allows you to see sets using same items. It's always fun to see how other people used the same piece!

It's fun to mix prints! And with so many to choose from this spring season (tie-dye, stripe, floral, polka-dot...), you can make it all your own. We picked out a few of our favorite looks from the spring shows, and found some celebrities trying it out, too. Do not adjust your monitor!

So, are you thinking about mixing the prints in your wardrobe?

The easiest way to mix prints is to choose two prints with the exact same colors. You'll notice both Rachel Bilson and Whitney Port (shown above) took this route using black/white or black/gray combinations.

We suggest using colors from the same palate. One piece might have a number of colors, so choose a color to draw out from the first print with your second print choice. For example, perhaps you have a multi-colored floral, but you'd like to draw attention to the green in the pattern. Choose a simple second print with the same shade of green to draw attention to the color. This is most fun if the color you draw out is NOT the dominant color in the primary print. So, lets say the floral print is primarily pink, but the background leaves are green. Using contrast steps your look up a notch and makes a completely different look with your pieces.

Two... maybe three prints is enough. Your look can look too busy all too quickly with more than two prints. We're not saying it's impossible, but it definitely gets more difficult to pull off the more you add.

If you want to mix palates, use prints that have only one or two colors. For example, navy and white polka-dot would complement red and gold stripes, despite being from different color groups. Funky nautical!

Here's an example from Female Network. They used a blue and white striped shirt to draw the blue from the skirt. They did use the dominant color in the second print, but we like that they added the belt to bring in the contrast.

We had the idea to do a post for each of our employees to get insight into their style. I had the opportunity to meet with CaMicha the other day. (She's the beauty featured in our last post about Diane Von Furstenberg). She told us that she loves deep, bright greens and blues-- jewel tones. When shopping, she's attracted to anything with a special detailing or embellishment. She had some great style advice:

"Choose one statement piece. Keep the rest of the outfit basic."

Diane Von Furstenberg is a designer who understands women. Famous for her wrap dresses, she is a master of draping and form, and uses beautiful fabrics in interesting prints. We Love to Brag

So, remember when we had that article about how much we love turquoise? Well, apparently Pantone agrees, because they've called it the color of the YEAR! Which we are pretty excited because the color goes with just about everything, and is simultaneously cool and fun. Pantone explained that it was probably so popular because it's soothing and makes people think of vacation, which is reason enough for us. Check out the article at New York Magazine.

So... This is going to have to be an ongoing profile, since Marc Jacobs is one of our all-time absolute favorite designers, but we have some amazing pieces in right now so we have to start somewhere!

Marc Jacobs is the head designer of Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, as well as creative director at Louis Vuitton. Perhaps his earliest claim to fame was bringing "grunge" from the music scene onto the fashion scene at Perry Ellis back in 1993. Love you, Naomi!

The label, which had been arguably pretty preppy prior to this point, dismissed him, but grunge didn't go away. Of course it didn't; We all wanted Kurt Cobain!

Okay, so maybe we're going on a bit of a grunge tangent, here. Ultimately, the point we want to make is that while "grunge" was already prolific, Marc Jacobs was responsible for bringing it out of the 90's counterculture and into the fashion forefront.

In fact, the style had a revival more recently (just type "grunge" in the search bar at Urban Outfitters), as plaid flannel shirts and Doc Martens have surged in popularity. We also can't help but think of the Black beanie hats at Alexander Wang's famed show in 2008.

Jacobs even incorporated plaid into his own more recent collections at Marc by Marc (RTW Fall 2010), but in a more sophisticated manner.

Maybe this is a reflection of his own changes... His whole image has moved in that direction in more recent years. Perhaps polished hubbie, Lorenzo Martone's influence?

The site hasn't launched yet, but we're really interested to check it out when it does... even if we'd rather spend our $50 on shoes.

Last night, the Fashion Institute of Technology's radio station had a few of the top editors from Elle magazine on the air, and the topic of fashion bloggers arose. Just thought we should chip in our two cents, since here we are... fashion blogging.

Of course, the editors from Elle had to downplay the importance of fashion blogs, because the overlap in topics infringes on their fashion information territory. I'm sure nobody is shocked that people would rather have paperless, convenient, regularly updated, free information at their fingertips... This article from New York Magazine's "The Cut," has a few quotes from the evening.

While everything they said was fair game, we think they were a bit dismissive of Tavi, who has been sitting front-row at a number of huge shows this year. If you haven't seen Tavi's blog, you should definitely check it out. Honestly, I didn't know the names of the editors from Elle, but I knew all about 13 year-old Tavi's blog, Style Rookie. Maybe we are overlooking the influence of the well-known fashion blogs!

Designer Profile: Elie Tahari

We have a couple of incredible consignors to thank for the plethora of amazing Elie Tahari pieces available at both of our stores. We love Tahari because their pieces are made from the best quality fabrics... and are so, so romantic! "Everything magical happens to me when I am in love," says Elie Tahari himself on their website. Aw! Makes me want to wrap myself in an emerald green silk blouse and draw hearts in my cappuccino.

Elie Tahari pieces are available at Elie Tahari boutiques and high-end department stores such as Saks or Bloomingdales. Pieces run from $78 for a basic tank to $998 for an incredible leather jacket... of course they're a lot cheaper when you shop resale!

This stunning velvet top with silk chiffon and beaded trim came into our Broadway store, and it's one of our prized pieces. Any lucky ladies size medium? A steal at $43!!

Speaking of Scarves...

Speaking of scarves, I came across this adorable image on The Sartorialist that I absolutely had to share. The black and white stripes look very Parisian, non? And then she picks up the stripe again in the mittens, which is too cute. This also exemplifies the belt, creating an hourglass on a shapeless top... oh! And a "pop" of color peeking out below. Oh, Paris, je t'aime!

Easy Outfit Ideas!

#1: The Cardigan:

Long Solid Cardi + Belt + Floral Top + Pants or Jeans = A Layered Masterpiece!

Bonus points for fun earrings and sexy low ponytail! We love this outfit because of the layers. This time of year, you never know if it's going to be be cold and rainy, or hot and sunny. Regardless of the weather, this outfit is sure to put you in a sunny mood! It's also great because it can be dressy enough for work, but casual enough for weekend.

#2: The Dress:

Basic Tank + Cotton Dress + Statement Necklace (or two!) = Pretty as a Princess!

Bonus points for carrying around a fresh flower all day? Okay, maybe not. But her sensual waves are GORGEOUS. This outfit gets and A+ for easy. Dresses are great because they're a one-piece outfit, but sometimes you can get caught in the, "Oh, I just wore this dress last week," dilemma. Accessorizing and layering your dresses is important because it creates a whole new look from the same body-covering piece. We just adore the use of multiple statement necklaces in Anthropologie's take, shown above. The little bit of red really draws out the use of the tank underneath. (On a personal note, I picked up this "layer under dresses" technique from my co-worker Melanie, and I don't exaggerate to call it life-changing. Try a long-sleeve basic underneath, instead of a cardi over, for cooler days.)

#3: The Blouse:

Blouse + Belt + Printed Pant = BAM!

The use of a printed pant really kicks this basic blouse up a notch, and the belt creates an hourglass shape on a straighter top. If you're fearing the printed pant, don't. Of course, when choosing a pair, consider the following: First, you want to make sure that you have some basics to pair with your pair. The easiest "match" is to find basics that bring out colors in the actual print. Most prints have a base in some neutral color, like navy, black, or brown, so those are always fall-back choices. Instead, as shown here, you can opt for a solid bright color from the print, which may require some shopping... Or choose a fun contrast color! Beware of getting too busy, but if done carefully, this can be a lot of fun and totally change your look. For example, say you have a navy and white striped pant. A red top is a major contrast. Together, they create an adorable nautical look. If the print you're using lacks much color it's always a good idea to add a fun accessory or layering piece for a bright "pop."

Another thing to consider with print pants is the size of the print. If you're smaller, large prints will overwhelm and dwarf you. If you're larger, small prints will make you look bigger. Print size is also something to consider if you're bigger on top than bottom, or vice versa. As most of us learned from our mothers, vertical stripes elongate, which is why they're ever-so-popular!

#4: The Pant:

Colorful Scarf + Basic Tank + Cuffed Pant + Layered Bangles = Casual Chic!

We can't love this outfit enough. On those days when you barely feel like getting out of bed, don't fret! Just roll up your comfiest pants, throw on a tank... then accessorize! Scarves are so much fun, and if you ask us, grossly underutilized. And we know you've got a bunch of cute bangle bracelets-- wear them all at once! For extra class, wear heels... but this outfit would look great with an embellished or gladiator sandal, too. Relax, you look great!

Galliano in Wonderland

John Galliano's designs, while extravagantly awesome, are usually too over-the-top costume-y to make us really picture ourselves in them... that is definitely not the case this season. There are tons of pieces in the Christian Dior Fall 2010 RTW collection we would actually *gasp* wear (and wear and wear and wear)! A timely nod to Alice in Wonderland was evident; perhaps that's why we're so infatuated. We just can't wait to see Tim Burton's take on this classic tale.

Fabrics Demystified... RAYON

What is rayon? Rayon is derived from naturally occurring cellulose fiber. Made in the world's oldest known fabric process, it originated in 1800's France. Rayon is sometimes referred to as "art silk" because of its ease in dying and draping, as well as its lustrous sheen. It's actually more biodegradable than cotton, and often less expensive. We have many rayon pieces at Here We Go Again, particularly in our Red's Threads pieces. Red's Threads is a company based in Ashland, Oregon. We just love their breezy spring pieces (not to mention the fact that they are responsible for their own design and manufacturing processes!)

So, how is rayon made? The answer is best left to the experts at wisegeek.com

"The wood fibers used in the makeup of rayon come from one of three major species of trees. Pine, spruce and hemlock are the most popular choices, but these are not the only ones that can be used...

"Once the material has been collected, the wood is ready for processing. The wood pulp is ground up and treated with sodium hydroxide. This is then dried over a period of several days. The resulting product is then mixed with liquid carbon disulfide. This becomes a very thick liquid with the approximate consistency of honey.

"Once this is done, the liquid is then stored a few more days for aging. Then, the liquid is forced through a device with many holes to make individual strands. These strands are fed into acid, where they solidify. This helps create the basis for the solid material. Without this step, there would be no solid and, thus, no fabric.

"After the filaments ave been created, the rest of the process is very similar to the manufacturing process of any other clothing material. It must be spun into yarn. The equipment to do this is the same as those used for many other different types of fibers. The most common spinning methods for rayon include spool, pot and continuous spinning.

"Once the fibers have been spun, the finishing touches can be added. These include treating the rayon fabric for fire resistance, shrinking and resistance to water. The smoothness of the fabric can also be affected, depending on the type of treatment given. These treatments help make the fabrics unique from one another. While these are the basic steps to manufacturing rayon, there are other steps that can be added depending on the type of rayon fabric being created."

The loss of Alexander McQueen was tremendous. He was a true artist and unique mind. We thought we'd take a look back at some of our favorite looks from his collections...

Asian inspiration from one of his earlier collections, Spring 2005 Women's RTW. This close-up really allows you to appreciate the detail and craftsmanship. This an all other photos from New York Magazine Fashion, unless otherwise noted.

McQueen was a master of performance and spectacle. In his Fall 06 Women's RTW collection, Kate Moss appeared as a hologram for his closing look.
